There are four basic elements to Civility, no matter what the environment.

 

These are :

  • Social intelligence (the ability to adapt your behavior appropriately to the social group or environment you may find yourself in)
  • Cultural competence – having an understanding and awareness of different cultures and how they operate and what they bring to North America  culture, and a true respect for diversity)
  • Systems Thinking (Instead of looking at a situation or a workplace or other environment from a selfish perspective, Systems thinking is the practice of considering the big picture, how things blend together,  how people can interact positively)
  • Continuous Learning

 

Experts draw a clear distinction  between civility and just “manners.”

Essentially, a person with civility will always operate in an ethical manner, and from a perspective of how things affect other human beings.
